Two men board the train and stand behind me. They are halfway through a conversation:
'So what did Clare think?
'Clare was bell ringing. So I didn't want to 'phone her because she wouldn't hear.'
'Yeah, it is quite loud.'

Also, Clare wouldn't have been able to answer the phone or she would have had to put down her bells and cause chaos amongst the rest of the bell ringers.

For a moment I thought you were reporting some latest crime of management-speak, 'bell ringing' being perhaps a distant cousin of 'running it up the flagpole' or 'flying a kite'. Any takers?! Feel free to invent your own meaning.
